Travel Logistics

We recommend flying in and out of Chennai International Airport.

  • Our tour will begin at the Chennai International Airport, where we will meet with all participants before driving to Auroville. Participants are asked to plan their arrival at the airport to be before 3am local time on January 28. Participants already in country who wish to meet us at Auroville instead are welcome to do so.

  • The program officially ends on Tuesday, February 11 and we encourage you to find flights that leave in the early morning of the 12th. We will arrange group transportation to the Chennai airport on the evening of the 11th (or based on your unique schedules).

  • Please note that a visa is required to visit India from abroad. Recently a new one-month tourist e-visa has been made available. It can be booked online and obtained directly at the airport. You don’t even need to send off your passport. Get your e-visa here: https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/tvoa.html

Lodging

Lodging varies from shared dorm-style rooms to simple private rooms, depending on availability. Rooms will be shared with fellow travelers. We will separate male and female rooms, while couples and families are placed in private rooms whenever possible.

You can upgrade to a private room when booking (select the $800 single room supplement). Upgrades to private rooms are not always guaranteed due to the nature of some locations.

Whenever possible we arrange for overnight accommodations at the ecovillages and communities we visit. This allows for a more immersive experience of what it’s like to live in a community. When the community doesn't have enough accommodation space or a scheduling conflict, then we stay at nearby lodging. We strive to stay at accommodations that are values aligned, such as small family businesses or eco-lodges. Accommodations are often rustic, emphasizing sustainability over luxury. Some may include composting toilets, limited Wi-Fi, limited air conditioning, and communal facilities.

Meals

As much as possible our meals will be fresh, local and organic, with produce grown on-site. Most meals will be vegetarian. When eating out at restaurants, we will have a fixed menu with a few options of local specialties. One beverage is usually included with lunch and dinner. Extra dishes and drinks are on you. We can accommodate a range of dietary requirements, to a point, so please contact us to inform us about any food allergies and come prepared with your own specialty food or supplement needs. We will stop at grocery stores where you can purchase your own snacks.

Weather

During our time in Auroville at the end of January and beginning of February, you can expect warm and pleasant weather, perfect for outdoor activities. Daytime temperatures typically range from 26°C (79°F) to 30°C (86°F), while nights are cooler, averaging around 22°C (72°F). The humidity is moderate at around 62%, and there is a very low chance of rain. You can look forward to plenty of sunshine, with approximately 10 hours of sunlight each day.

Packing

A full packing list will be provided after booking the tour. Laundry service will be available at some of our locations. Due to the limited space in our vehicles, each passenger will only be allowed one suitcase and one day bag.

Plan to pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and comfortable under the sun. Don't forget swimwear and comfortable shoes for exploring the diverse landscapes.

Physical Requirements

This trip will include several day hikes and walks up hills and on uneven terrain. We will visit a few waterfalls and rivers with slippery footing. Some of our accommodations have narrow stairs and no elevators. You will be responsible to carry your luggage to and from your rooms, which will not always be paved surfaces.

Please consider your physical fitness before registering for the tour.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Unfortunately, due the nature of the tour we cannot accommodate anyone with mobility requirements, such as use of a wheelchair.

Traveling with Children

It is possible to bring children on this tour, however not all children and families may be suited to this adventure. For children 15 and under, please contact us to discuss suitability on your specific tour. We will supply you with a discount code to use to receive child discounts:

  • Ages 3 and under: Free

  • Ages 4-7: 50% off

  • Ages 8-15: 20% off

Families with children should note that tours generally include long periods of sitting for presentations, strenuous walking, uneven terrain, some long car rides, and moving among multiple locations for sleeping. Laundry services are limited. We want to encourage families to join, so long as they are prepared for these challenges.

Parents or guardians assume full responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of their children throughout the tour. Children must be supervised at all times. Children under 1.5 meters tall need a booster seat. Please be sure to bring a car seat if your child needs one, or you may rent one at cost.

Payment & Cancellation Policy

A refundable deposit of $500 is required at the time of booking to secure your space. Full payment is required 60 days before the departure date. At the time of booking you can choose to make your payment in full or pay the deposit and remaining payments in auto-payment installments.

Your tour deposit is 100% refundable for 30 days from the date it is received unless noted otherwise. One of the greatest experiences I have ever had. A completely unique journey to some wondrous ecovillage projects, full of inspirational humans. To share the tours with others with similar visions was enriching and a real privilige. I left feeling fulfilled and educated.

All-inclusive: From eco-friendly lodging to local cuisine, we've got you covered.

Small group size: We limit the number of participants to ensure a personalized and intimate experience.

Hassle free travel: We cover all the logistics, so you can get the most out of the experience.

What’s the alternative?

You could try visiting intentional communities on your own, except that…

  • Many communities are not open to the public and, if they are, the founders will not give you their undivided attention as a just normal passer-through.

  • Figuring out the logistics of getting yourself around is a headache and you’ll have no immediate support if something goes awry.

  • Traveling alone isn’t as nourishing or nearly as fun journeying with a small group in an intentionally held container for connection.

  • It’ll take years of relationship building and financial investment to even come close to the experience that Ecovillage Tours is able to offer… because we’ve done all that work for you already!
