Frequently Asked Questions

Our answers to your common questions.

General Information

  • An ecovillage is a community designed to promote sustainability across environmental, social, and economic dimensions. They often incorporate local food systems, renewable energy, communal decision-making, and regenerative living practices. Our tours provide an immersive experience in these intentional communities, offering insights into daily life, sustainability efforts, and community values.

  • While our focus is on ecovillages, we visit a variety of intentional communities during our tours, such as cohousing projects, permaculture centers, spiritual retreats, regenerative farms, and cultural centers. Our aim is to showcase the diverse ways people are choosing to live intentionally. In addition to visiting communities, our tours include cultural, nature, and wellness activities.

  • Many of the communities we visit do have openings for new members, while others may not have openings or specific requirements for joining. We aim to provide insights into community life, with opportunities to discuss membership pathways directly with residents where possible. Contact us with questions about a specific community you may be interested in joining.

  • Our tours are conducted primarily in English. While local guides may offer insights in other languages, the main language of communication is English. Contact us if you have specific language needs or concerns.

  • Ecovillage Tours attract participants from a wide range of backgrounds, life stages, and global locations. Many are in a moment of transition in their personal lives or careers, and seeking a transformative experience, meaningful connections, and an introduction to a different way of life. Often they are looking to join an intentional community or start a community project. Participants range from sustainability enthusiasts, academics, activists, college graduates, retirees, and families.

  • Tours usually have between 8 and 16 participants, which allows for personalized experiences and easier interaction with community members. The group is typically led by 1-3 experienced guides who have backgrounds in ecovillages or are locals in the region. These guides are also the drivers, staying with the group, sharing meals, and supporting the group with facilitation and learning activities throughout the trip.

Tour Logistics

  • A typical day may include visits to one or two intentional communities. Upon arrival in the morning, we’re often greeted by the founder or key residents who’ll give us a tour of the grounds followed by a workshop or presentation on aspects of community life. Lunch is usually a shared meal with residents at the community, followed by an afternoon for free exploration and relaxation. Swimming at a nearby river or ocean is lovely, especially on a warm afternoon. Generally the beginning of the trip is designed with a more full schedule, with more free time and nature activities towards the end of the itinerary. One completely free day is included in longer trips, for participants to plan their own excursions or rest from the activities. Some days may have longer car rides, although we take a break every hour and generally don’t have car rides longer than 4 hours on any given day, 1 hour is more typical.

  • Whenever possible we arrange for overnight accommodations at the ecovillages and communities we visit. This allows for a more immersive experience of what it’s like to live in a community. When the community doesn't have enough accommodation space or a scheduling conflict, then we stay at nearby lodging. We strive to stay at accommodations that are values aligned, such as small family businesses or eco-lodges.

  • Lodging varies from shared dorm-style rooms to simple private rooms, depending on availability. Rooms will be shared with fellow travelers. We will separate male and female rooms, while couples and families are placed in private rooms whenever possible.

You can upgrade to a private room when booking (select the $800 single room supplement). Upgrades to private rooms are not always guaranteed due to the nature of some locations.

Accommodations are often rustic, emphasizing sustainability over luxury. Some may include composting toilets, limited Wi-Fi, limited air conditioning, and communal facilities.

  • As much as possible our meals will be fresh, local and organic, with produce grown on-site. Most meals will be vegetarian. When eating out at restaurants, we will have a fixed menu with a few options of local specialties. One beverage is usually included with lunch and dinner. Extra dishes and drinks are on you. We can accommodate a range of dietary requirements, to a point, so please contact us to inform us about any food allergies and come prepared with your own specialty food or supplement needs. We will stop at grocery stores where you can purchase your own snacks.

  • We use comfortable vans for ground transport. These vehicles may have limited space for luggage, so participants should pack light (one suitcase and one day bag per traveler). We typically have 1-3 vans depending on the group size. Participants may travel in their own vehicles, but only if confirmed and pre-arranged with the guides.

  • All transportation is included during the tour, from the start to end points. Depending on the tour, participants are responsible for getting to the starting location or we may be able to provide pick ups at airports and hotels nearby. Read the instructions in your confirmation email or simply contact us with any questions about how to best reach the tour starting point. Kindly please arrive on time or even early for the start of the tour. Contact us immediately in the event of flight cancellations or delays.

  • Tour durations vary, generally lasting from 6 to 15 days. Check the specific tour details on our website for the exact itinerary and length.

  • A full packing list will be provided upon booking. Essential items include comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a reusable water bottle, and any personal hygiene items. Due to limited vehicle space, each participant is allowed one suitcase and one day bag.

Special Requests

  • We offer a limited number of private rooms per tour. You can upgrade to a private room when booking (select the $800 single room supplement). Please note that due to the rustic nature of some accommodations, private rooms may not be guaranteed at every stop. We will do our best to meet your request. Couples and families are placed in private rooms whenever possible.

  • We strive to accommodate a variety of dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and others. You’ll have the opportunity to share your dietary needs and allergies when completing your participant form. We share this information with all the communities providing us meals. We encourage you to bring specialty foods you may need if you’re unsure of their availability locally.  Just ask if you have any questions about accommodating specific dietary requirements.

  • Participants of all ages are welcome, but they must be able to handle the physical requirements of the tour, including walking on uneven terrain and carrying luggage. All the more strenuous activities, such as hikes, will be made optional. Contact us to discuss specific needs or concerns for young children or older adults.

  • Pets are generally not allowed, as many ecovillages have policies against them. Service dogs may be accommodated with advance notice. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

  • Yes, we make every effort to accommodate those with wheelchairs. Please note that the vans typically do not have lifts, so power wheelchairs are not feasible, and the terrain can be uneven in some of the tour locations. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

  • Health insurance coverage is required on all of our trips.  You can work with your current insurance provider to get extended coverage, however, it may be more affordable to work with a company that specializes in travel health insurance. Be sure to check if your insurance covers trip interruptions, baggage loss, etc.

  • Vaccination requirements vary depending on the country and current health advisories. Please consult your healthcare provider well before departure to ensure you are up-to-date on necessary vaccinations.

Cancellations and Emergencies

  • Your eligibility for a refund depends on when you cancel and when you made your booking:

    • Within 30 days of deposit: Your $500 tour deposit is 100% refundable for 30 days from the date it is received, unless otherwise noted.

    • 60–90 days before departure: If you cancel 60-90 days before the tour’s start date, your deposit becomes non-refundable on the final payment due date (60 days before departure).

    • Less than 60 days before departure: If you book a tour less than 60 days before its departure, the entire cost becomes non-refundable 7 days after booking. However, in case of a medical or family emergency, we may issue a credit toward future travel.

    • Cancellation after the final payment date: Once the final payment due date has passed (60 days before departure), all payments are non-refundable. You may be eligible for a credit towards a future tour in case of a creditable event, such as a medical or family emergency.

Visit our Tour Conditions page for complete details.

  • If we cancel a trip, we will provide a full refund of your payments. We recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover any additional expenses.

  • Our guides are trained to handle emergencies, and we carry basic first aid kits. In case of serious medical issues, we will arrange for transportation to the nearest medical facility. Ensure you have travel insurance to cover medical costs.

  • If you fall ill, we will do our best to ensure you receive proper care and assistance. Our guides are trained in basic first aid and carry essential medical supplies. If your condition requires more serious medical attention, we will help arrange transportation to the nearest healthcare facility. However, participants are responsible for any medical expenses incurred during the tour, so we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before departure. Please inform our staff of any pre-existing medical conditions so we can be prepared to support you.
